I am a historian who teaches about the early American republic at American University in Washington, D.C.  My central areas of research are the history of law, politics, institutions, and political economy from the early days of the American Revolution until the first shots of the American Civil War.  I do so through the lens of governance, or the practices of power and authority–formal and informal–that connected society with governmental institutions.  I’ve got plenty more to say about this stuff on my Research page.
